The Market plays many roles
Recently, as I’ve talked to various people about the Market, I’ve started to realize that Reading Terminal is different for everyone. For some, it’s their local grocery store. For others, it’s a place to escape inclement or oppressive weather. It is a place to get a beer, eat a sandwich and do work outside of the home or office. Some people only go there once or twice a year, in accordance with a family tradition that dictates that you must buy your Thanksgiving turkey from Godshalls or your Easter cake from Termini Bros.
For me it has been a place where I could get fresh veggies, fish and poultry within an eight-block walk of my apartment. It’s been a place to film podcasts and to meet friends for breakfast. This summer it has become deeply familiar, and is feeling more and more like a second home.
What is the Market to you?

Someplace I want to explore more since I have only cut through it on the way to the Flower Show
I’m with Sparky. The Market is awesome, but I typically only eat there during the Flower Show, and since I found it, always at DiNics. Wish I lived nearer (although I could always just hop off the train).
I hate the Market now. They have forced out some businesses, they wouldn’t allow our group fund raise during Christmas (like the previous management did) and now they are throwing Rick’s Steaks out. Nothing is sacred. The Terminal used to be a really great and cool place and now it is just another overpriced yuppie attraction.
Love the terminal, but if Rick’s goes, it won’t be the same for me. But hey there’s still some tasty places that I waste my money on at lunch. Carrot cake and fresh fruit juice for lunch! hey, at least there’s fruit involved…
I’ve lived in town for a year (after 4 years in NYC), and if the RTM disappeared I think I’d have to move away. It’s the local grocery store, a foodie adventure and an amazing spot for people-watching. I see a lot of lifelong Philadelphians grumbling about changes there, but guys, seriously, appreciate the jewel you have.
